Warden’s Report

As I sit down to write it is August 5th and I can’t believe summer is almost over. The new program year is starting and soon another year will be behind us. This year marks the 120th year St Michael’s has been here in Carlsbad.

For my family, this will mark our ninth year at St. Michael’s.  Some of you have spent many more seasons here, and some less. The exact number each of us spends here doesn’t matter as much as the number of years St. Michael’s will remain here and continue to shine the Light of Christ into Carlsbad.  Our goal is to make sure St. Michael’s is well positioned to celebrate her 200th anniversary in 2094.

As your Vestry has committed to making decisions that will continue our ability to live our mission, the Diocese has formed a group to do the same. St. Michael’s, along with five other area Episcopal Churches (St. Anne’s Oceanside, Holy Cross Carlsbad, Grace San Marcos, St. Andrew’s Encinitas and All Saints Vista) will be working together over the next five months to talk about how we do mission, how we best utilize our resources, and how we remain good stewards.

St. Michael’s has been working on these very issues since early 2013.  We believe we are in a good position to help lead this process and share our success with the group.  Stay tuned for more information and frequent updates.

Last week the Vestry and Shine! Commission met with architect Lance O’Donnell to review the plans for our Narthex Expansion Project and surrounding landscapes.  He heard your comments from the all-parish meeting, made some changes to the plans, and included some exciting ideas for the entire campus.  We continue to have a wonderful exchange of ideas, make fine-tuning adjustments, and are excited to present the final plan to everyone later this fall.  Once the plan is complete, Vestry will recommend a timeline for completion of the project.

As most of you have probably noticed, work has begun on our north property rental unit.  We are hopeful to finish and have the unit rented out this fall. Vestry member Madeline Silcox is working hard with the general contractor and property manager to make sure the project is completed in a timely fashion and within our budget.

Finally, thanks be to God and to your generous stewardship pledges and giving, through July we are $24,000 ahead of our budget!  As expected, summer giving has been down and we anticipate this surplus will be used to cover this time period.  In order to help alleviate this summertime pinch, please check out the on-line giving option on our website.

The Vestry has already begun the work of preparing the 2015 budget. Thanks to your continued support, we are excited to look at the possibility of being able to expand some of our programs. Look for communication from the Stewardship team soon!

With so much activity here at St. Michael’s and throughout the Diocese, I ask you to pray for the Church:

“O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to a goodly fellowship of faith.  Bless our Bishop, James, and other clergy, and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
