DESCRIPTION:Come to the Parish Hall for Pancake Supper (and pancake toss!) 5:30-7:30pm. All are welcome to join in the feast! \nRSVP here to help us get a head count for pancakes! \nCelebrated the day before Ash Wednesday\, Shrove Tuesday (also called “Pancake Tuesday” or “Pancake Day”) is the final day before the 40-day period of Lent begins. This year it falls on Feb. 21st. \nIts name comes from the Germanic-Old English word “shrive\,” meaning absolve\, and it is the last day of the liturgical season historically known as Shrovetide. Because it comes directly before Lent\, a season of fasting and penitence\, this was the day that Christians would go to be “shriven” by their confessor. \nShrove Tuesday also became a day for pre-fasting indulgence. In particular\, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter\, milk\, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day. \nThere are even historical references to a “pancake bell” in English towns being rung around 11 a.m. on this day to signal that it was time to get frying. \n

SUMMARY:Stations of the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Stations of the Cross in the church every Friday during Lent at 5:30pm. \nYou can also pray along with this new devotional video. An online booklet is here. \nThe practice of pilgrims to the Holy Land following the Way of Sorrows from the house of Pilate to the Holy Sepulchre was the origin of this devotion\, which became widespread in the later Middle Ages\, although it was not completely formalized until the eighteenth century. This is a popular and appropriate devotion during Lent and Holy Week. Eight of the stations are based directly upon events recorded in the Gospels. The remaining six (stations III\, IV\, VI\, VII\, IX\, and XIII) are based upon inferences from the Gospels or upon pious legend\, and may be omitted if desired. \nAt St. Michael’s by-the-Sea Episcopal Church\, the unique Italian station artworks complement the mid-century modern architecture of the 1959 church building\, designed by Albert Frey\, the father of desert modernism.

DESCRIPTION:Music begins at 4:00\, service at 4:30pm. \n2775 Carlsbad Blvd Carlsbad\, CA 92008 \n––––––––––––––––––– \nDuke Ellington referred to jazz as “the only unhampered\, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced in this country.” Ken Burns calls jazz an “utterly American art form” and a “profound intersection of freedom and creativity.” St. Michael’s Jazz Evensong was born out of a desire to bring this freedom\, creativity\, and joy to people during the dark days of anxiety and isolation experienced through the COVID-19 pandemic. \nThese gatherings are a unique blend of exceptional jazz rooted in the context of Anglican meditation and prayer. They are held every Sunday afternoon and offered free of charge to the community.
