Entrance Procession

Christ For The World We Sing

Christ for the world we sing! The world to Christ we bring
With loving zeal; the poor, and them that mourn,
The faint and overborne, sin sick and sorrow worn,
Whom Christ doth heal.

Christ for the world we sing! The world to Christ we bring
With joyful song; The new-born souls, whose days,
Reclaimed from error’s ways, inspired with hope and praise,
To Christ belong.

Opening Acclamation

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis

Glory, glory, to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father.
We worship, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory,
We praise you for your glory,
Lord, Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us, You are seated at the right hand of the Father,
Receive our prayer, receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy one, you alone are the Lord.
You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
With the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father.
Amen. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Collect

Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and all the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson

Jonah 3:1-5, 10

Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nin’eveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nin’eveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nin’eveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he cried, “Yet forty days, and Nin’eveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nin’eveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did not do it.

Psalm 62:6-14

6 For God alone my soul in silence waits; *
truly, my hope is in him.

7 He alone is my rock and my salvation, *
my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.

8 In God is my safety and my honor; *
God is my strong rock and my refuge.

9 Put your trust in him always, O people, *
pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.

10 Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, *
even those of low estate cannot be trusted.

11 On the scales they are lighter than a breath, *
all of them together.

12 Put no trust in extortion;
in robbery take no empty pride; *
though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

13 God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, *
that power belongs to God.

14 Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, *
for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit*
As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

The Epistle

1 Corinthians 7:29-31

I mean, brethren, the appointed time has grown very short; from now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the form of this world is passing away.

Sequence Hymn

How Bright Appears The Morning Star

How bright appears the Morning Star, with mercy beaming from afar;
The host of heaven rejoices; O righteous Branch, O Jesse’s Rod!
Thou Son of Man and Son of God! We, too, will lift our voices;
Jesus, Jesus! Holy, holy, yet most lowly, draw thou near us;
Great Emmanuel, come and hear us.

Rejoice, ye heavens; thou earth, reply; with praise, ye sinners fill the sky,
For this his incarnation, incarnate God, put forth thy power,
Ride on, ride on, great conqueror, Till all know thy salvation,
Amen, Amen! Alleluia! Alleluia! praise be given evermore,
by earth and heaven.

The Gospel

Mark 1:14-20

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel.” And passing along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.

The Sermon

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father;
by whom all things were made;
who for us and for our salvation
came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried;
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures,
and ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
and he shall come again, with glory,
to judge both the quick and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life,
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped
and glorified;
who spake by the Prophets.
And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church;
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;
and I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People (Form IV)

Let us pray for the Church and for the world, especially for Bartholomew of Constantinople, Francis of Rome, Justin of Canterbury, Michael the Presiding Bishop, Susan of San Diego, and the clergy and people of St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. In the Anglican cycle of prayer, let us pray for The Church of South India (United); and in the Diocesan cycle of prayer, let us pray for the growth of service in the diocese.

Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world.

Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good.

Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory.

Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, especially Ben and the PRO Mentors Prison Ministry; the children and staff of Vida Joven de México; Women’s Resource Center; St. Michael’s Altar Guild, chapters of The Daughters of the King, and Dinners of Eight; and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us.

Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer.

Father of all mercies and God of all comfort, look with pity on all who are suffering during this time of violence and warfare, especially in the Middle East and in Ukraine. Protect the defenseless, heal the wounded, and sustain those mourning the loss of loved ones. Open to us a path of reconciliation and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Confession of Sin

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved thee with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in thy will,
and walk in thy ways,
to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Offertory

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.

Offertory Anthem

Lord, For Thy Tender Mercies Sake | Richard Farrant

Lord, for Thy tender mercies’ sake, lay not our sins to our charge,
But forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives,
To decline from sin and incline to virtue,
That we may walk with a perfect heart,
Before Thee now and evermore.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen.

Spiritual Communion

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of thy Holy Ghost. Amen.

Lord, I cannot seek Thee
On Thine altar throne,
Yet I may receive Thee,
Weary and alone.

When, before Thine altar,
Crowds adoring kneel,
There in very essence,
Thou didst come to heal.

Far from Priest and altar,
Christ, to Thee I cry,
Come to me in spirit,
Let me feel Thee nigh.

In my silent worship,
Let me share the feast,
Be Thy love the altar,
By Thyself the Priest. Amen.

O most blessed Saviour, in union with the faithful at every altar of Thy Church where Thy blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer Thee praise and thanksgiving, I present to Thee my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may always be united to Thee. And since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally into my heart, I unite myself to Thee and embrace Thee with all the affections of my soul. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in my heart.

Communion Meditation

Lamp Of Our Feet, Whereby We Trace

Lamp of our feet, whereby we trace our path when wont to stray;
Stream from the fount of heav’nly grace, brook by the trav’ler’s way;

Bread of our souls, whereon we feed, true manna from on high;
Our guide and chart, wherein we read of realms beyond the sky;

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, be my sanctification.
Body of Christ, be my salvation;
Blood of Christ, fill all my veins;
Water from the side of Christ, wash, wash out my stains;
Passion of Christ, my comfort be;
O good Jesu, listen to me;
Within Thy wounds I fain would hide;
Ne’er to be parted from Thy side;
Guard me when the foe assails me;
Guide me when my feet shall fail me;
Bid me come to Thee above,
With Thy Saints to sing Thy love,
For ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn

O Jesus, I Have Promised

O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;
Be thou for ever near me, my Master and my friend;
I shall not fear the battle, if thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway, if thou wilt be my guide.

O Jesus, thou hast promised to all that follow thee,
That where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be;
And, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end;
O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend.

Dismissal

Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
