The Collect
Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins and give us, we beseech thee, the liberty of that abundant life which thou hast manifested to us in thy
Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lesson
Isaiah 58: 1-9
Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why have we fasted, and thou seest it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and thou takest no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a man to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am.
Psalm 15:1-7
1 Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord *
and have great delight in his commandments!
2 Their descendants will be mighty in the land; *
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3 Wealth and riches will be in their house, *
and their righteousness will last for ever.
4 Light shines in the darkness for the upright; *
the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.
5 It is good for them to be generous in lending *
and to manage their affairs with justice.
6 For they will never be shaken; *
the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.

The Epistle
1 Corinthians 2:1-12
When I came to you, brethren, I did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in much fear and trembling; and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him,” God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God.
The Gospel
Matthew 5:13-20
Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,

begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father;
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation
came down from heaven,

The Prayers of the People (Form IV)
Let us pray for the Church and for the world, especially for Bartholomew of
Constantinople, Leo of Rome, Sarah of Canterbury and the Anglican Communion
in this time of leadership transition, Sean our Presiding Bishop, Susan of San Diego,
and for the clergy of St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray
for the Province of the Anglican Church of the Congo. In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer,
we pray for the clergy and people of Trinity, Escondido; for the children and leaders at
Epiphany Camp at Camp Stevens; and for our Ecumenical partnerships during the Week
of Christian Unity. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; Grant, Almighty God,
that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love,
and reveal your glory in the world.

Confession of Sin
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved thee with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in thy will,
and walk in thy ways,

The Celebrant concludes with an absolution.
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised
forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith
turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your
sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to
everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer II
All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and
earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy,
didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to
suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and
perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy
Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious
death and sacrifice, until his coming again.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand
upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup
and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had
given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take,
eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the
New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of
sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and
make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial
thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed
passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious
ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and,
with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and
wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved
Son Jesus Christ.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of
praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord,
our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who
partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious
Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and
heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be
made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through
the same Jesus Christ our Lord;

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,

Agnus Dei
We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen
Post Communion Prayer
Almighty and ever living God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen
