In April, members of St. Michael’s visited Vida Joven de México (Tijuana), a home for children who have been abandoned or have parents in prison. We spent a fun, joy-filled morning with the children, playing games, making crafts, and capturing lots of memories. We were even able to be a part of a birthday celebration for three of the kids!
As adults, it can be intimidating to interact with people who speak a different language. Beth Beall, Program Developer for Vida Joven and our host for the trip, reminded us before we crossed the border into Mexico, “The kids don’t need you to speak Spanish. They just need you to show them you care.” It’s not about having a shared language. It’s about sharing what we have in common and showing God’s love through our actions.
Our St. Michael’s team included three children. My favorite thing about this visit was seeing them interact with the children from Vida Joven. They didn’t seem to have any trouble communicating with one another, despite the language barrier. They played tag, decorated crafts, and shared the birthday cake!
The team also had a chance to meet Diana, who is St. Michael’s sponsored child. She is a sweet 7 year-old who has lived at Vida Joven with her three siblings for the past two years. She and her older sister had a blast playing tag with the kids from St. Michael’s. It was a blessing to witness new relationships begin and to be a part of such a meaningful visit.
St. Michael’s hopes to return to Vida Joven regularly, with the next visit scheduled for September 17th. If you are at all interested, please fill out this interest form to reserve a space. Children and adults of all ages are welcome. A valid passport is required. Space is limited, so don’t wait!
