Entrance Procession

Praise, My Soul, The King Of Heaven

Praise, my Soul, the King of heaven; to his feet thy tribute bring;
Ransomed, healed, restored, for given, evermore his praises sing:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King.

Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress;
Praise him still the same as ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Glorious in his faithfulness.

Opening Acclamation

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have merc
y, Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy, have mercy.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain that which thou dost promise, make us to love that which thou dost command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lesson

Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-187

The LORD said to Moses, “Say to all the congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy. You shall do no injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. You shall not go up and down as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand forth against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason with your neighbor, lest you bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.”

Psalm 1

1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of
the wicked, *
nor lingered in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *
and they meditate on his law day and night.

3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *
everything they do shall prosper.

4 It is not so with the wicked; *
they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when
judgment comes, *
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

The Epistle

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

You yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain; but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile; but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never used either words of flattery, as you know, or a cloak for greed, as God is witness; nor did we seek glory from men, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse taking care of her children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

Sequence Hymn

My Faith Looks Up To Thee

My faith looks up to thee, thou Lamb of Calvary, Saviour divine!
Now hear me while I pray, take all my guilt away; O let me from this day be wholly thine.

May thy rich grace impart strength to my fainting heart, my zeal inspire;
As thou hast died for me, O may my love to thee pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire.

The Gospel

Matthew 22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet’? If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?” And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.

The Sermon

The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible;
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of his Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father;
by whom all things were made;
who for us and for our salvation
came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried;
and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures,
and ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father;
and he shall come again, with glory,
to judge both the quick and the dead;
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost the Lord, and Giver of Life,
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped
and glorified;
who spake by the Prophets.
And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church;
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins;
and I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People (Form III)

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for Bartholomew of Constantinople, Francis of Rome, Justin of Canterbury, Michael the Presiding Bishop, Susan of San Diego, and for the clergy of St. Michael’s by-the-Sea. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Anglican Church of Melanesia. In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the chaplains of the Armed Forces, and for members of religious orders, especially the Society of St. Paul. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others, especially Adrienne, Agnes, Al, Alex, Altar Guild, Amy, Anne, Anthony, Asa, Barb, Barbara, Ben and the PRO Mentors Prison Ministry, Blanca, Bob, Brad, Brett, Bruce, Casey, Chad, Charles, Cher, Christine, Chuck, CJ, Clara, Clark, Connie, Dan, Daughters of the King, David, Denise, Dennis, Diana, Diane, Dinners of Eight, Ed, Elaine, Eric, Erica and Chris, Gail, George, Georgia, Glen, Hospice of the North Coast, Jadon, Jake, Jake and Ashley, Jan, Jarrod, Jenny, Jerrod, John, Jose, Josh, Juan, Jung, Kristen, Les, Libby, Lisa, Louis, Luke, Lulu and Lewis, Lynn and Joanne, Madeleine, Mark, Mary, Mary Louise, Meggan, Melinda, Mike, Mylo, Naomi, Patrick, Paul, Pete, Rich, RJ, Robert, Ron, Ron and Dean, Roxie, Rusty and Cathy, Ruth, Ryan, Sam, Samantha, Sergio, Shari, Shelby, Sharon, Stephen and Tess, Steven, Susan, Suzie, Thelma, Tom, Trey, Tyler, Vicky, Vida Joven de México, Vince, Zach and Rebecca, and Ziggy; and for these loved ones deployed through the armed forces: Alex, Alvin, Bryan, David, Jacklyn, Jake, Jarrett, Jennifer, John, Joshua, Logan, Phillip, Ryan, Stephanie, and Trent.

Father of all mercies and God of all comfort, look with pity on all who are suffering during this time of violence and warfare. Protect the defenseless, heal the wounded, and sustain those mourning the loss of loved ones. Open to us a path of reconciliation and peace; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Silence

O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Confession of Sin

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved thee with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in thy will,
and walk in thy ways,
to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

Offertory Anthem

O Taste And See | Ralph Vaughn Williams

O taste and see how gracious the Lord is: blest is the man that trusteth in him.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.
Hosanna in the hightest, Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
For ever and ever. Amen.

Agnus Dei

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer, redeemer of the world:
Give us your peace, give us your peace.

Spiritual Communion

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of thy Holy Ghost. Amen.

Lord, I cannot seek Thee
On Thine altar throne,
Yet I may receive Thee,
Weary and alone.

When, before Thine altar,
Crowds adoring kneel,
There in very essence,
Thou didst come to heal.

Far from Priest and altar,
Christ, to Thee I cry,
Come to me in spirit,
Let me feel Thee nigh.

In my silent worship,
Let me share the feast,
Be Thy love the altar,
By Thyself the Priest. Amen.

O most blessed Saviour, in union with the faithful at every altar of Thy Church where Thy blessed Body and Blood are being offered to the Father, I desire to offer Thee praise and thanksgiving, I present to Thee my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may always be united to Thee. And since I cannot now receive Thee sacramentally into my heart, I unite myself to Thee and embrace Thee with all the affections of my soul. Amen.

Come, Lord Jesus, and dwell in my heart.

Communion Hymn

Nearer, My God, To Thee

Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee! E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me;
Still all my song would be, nearer, my God, to thee, nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee.

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, darkness be over me, My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God, to thee, nearer my God to thee, nearer to thee.

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, be my sanctification.
Body of Christ, be my salvation;
Blood of Christ, fill all my veins;
Water from the side of Christ, wash, wash out my stains;
Passion of Christ, my comfort be;
O good Jesu, listen to me;
Within Thy wounds I fain would hide;
Ne’er to be parted from Thy side;
Guard me when the foe assails me;
Guide me when my feet shall fail me;
Bid me come to Thee above,
With Thy Saints to sing Thy love,
For ever and ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn

Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation

Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and corner stone,
Chosen of the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one:
Holy Sion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone.

To this temple, where we call thee, come, O Lord of Hosts, today;
With thy wonted loving kindness hear thy servants as they pray,
And thy fullest benediction shed within its walls alway.

Dismissal

Let us go forth in the name of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
